Our Thoughts, Hearts, and Prayers Go Out to the People of Christchurch

Yet another devastating earthquake hit Christchurch City yesterday at 12.51pm. It measured 6.3 on the richtor scale and struck during the city’s busiest hours; only five months after the initial 7.1 magnitude earthquake which caused immense structural damage to the city. Tragically, unlike the September earthquake, yesterday’s disaster not only reduced buildings to rubble, but also claimed people’s lives. The death toll continues to rise as rescue efforts get underway.

It is during such times of loss that the strength of a nation’s spirit is revealed, and if there is any consolation to be gained from such a catastrophic event, it is that New Zealand is a country filled with courageous, selfless, supportive, and caring people. There has been a flood of volunteers from all parts of the country: individuals, communities, and organisations eager to lend a hand to a suffering city and its weary inhabitants. New Zealanders are rallying together to help rebuild a city which once held some of the country’s most beautiful historical buildings.

It is the reports and sights of every day Kiwis selflessly throwing themselves into harms way to help a complete stranger, and the deluge of supportive letters, texts, and emails, that are being broadcast through national radio and television; as well as the countless gestures of support – from people banding together to cook meals, provide medical assistance, and shelters to rescue workers and those who have suddenly found themselves without a home or loved one, that truly make us proud to be a part of this tiny but mighty nation. The solidarity and courage has been astounding and inspiring; and goes to show just what makes New Zealand great.
